Photos from UV Disinfection Solution Specialists's post One question I get asked a lot is “why did you choose UVC lighting for disinfection when the spray systems are so much easier?”
My wife is an amazing photographer, she specializes in newborns and families. When we started researching methods to truly disinfect we found not a lot of REAL options. A newborn studio for example is full of blankets, headbands, wraps, flokatis, and so much more. Literally a thousand items. The thought of spraying them with a chemical every time a client was in the studio did not sound like a good plan. Even if a Chemical is registered with the EPA doesn’t make them safe for everyone, including “eco friendly” chemicals. Many people are allergic. Another thing we learned through training taken from CDC, ISSA, GBAC, and others is that viruses can mutate from chemicals, any chemical. Another issue with chemicals is “Dwell time”. This is the amount of time a surface needs to stay wet with the chemical to be effective, example bleach has a dwell time of 5 minutes. That means you need to wipe or keep the surface wet with bleach for 5 minutes to eliminate viruses. So spraying with a chemical on items for babies was out.
I had known about UV-C lighting for a long time, my mother had a UV-C air purifier in her home in Tennessee 20 years ago. They have been used for over 40 years by hospitals and water treatment plants, as well as in HVAC systems.
I started researching them and found they not only eliminate viruses, they destroy it and it can not mutate. In fact, UV-C lights eliminate bacteria, mold, and more. I learned the best systems, how to use, time to “kill”, etc. I found out through research all UV-C lights are not the same. Many products purchased online made overseas were not real UV-C in the spectrum, many are UVB. Also, wattage strength plays a huge factor. For example, our hospital grade, commercial devices made in USA are 95 watts, the strongest bulbs made. These eliminate viruses within 8.56 seconds at 12 inches away. A handheld model of 1 to 2 watts (if real UV-C) would take 20 minutes or more. True Hospital grade commercial UV-C was the only choice.
Another great benefit of UV-C is that not only does it work, but there is no down time. When I disinfect a room it is available to be used right after I am done. No drying time, no odor, no residue. Some others suggest waiting 24 hours to return to the room, not acceptable.
The thought of spraying anything with a chemical where I eat, where babies might touch, or anything I might touch is just not something I would consider, especially when there is something truly better. Better for you, better for your family, and definitely without question better for the environment.
